Let’s slow down the tape.

Writer: Jonathan AshlineJonathan Ashline

Started my day off with some DBT today. For those who don’t know DBT is Dialectical Behavior Therapy. It’s used to treat Borderline Personality Disorder. My therapist used the expression “Let’s slow down the tape” to examine a situation in which my brain went into a momentary panic and my anxiety spiked without a clear trigger.

Turns out it was related to a fear of disappointing others and I think that’s really what drives a lot of what I do. This sense of never wanting to let anyone down so I end up overextending myself or over-committing to projects and work. *Sigh* This is a reminder to myself (and others) that you need to learn to say “no” more often. Stop trying to please everyone. Put your head down and focus on your own goals. On that note, I’ve got some writing to do.
